"The catalog was well done, and your new facilities were outstanding!"
- Dave Wnuck, Wallingford, CT
"Yes, I have received my lot and I enjoy it very much. It has been a pleasure to work with Smythe, and I look forward to working with you in the future. I really appreciate your understanding with my travel schedule along with your willingness to work with me and help me while I was away."
- G.M., Oregon
"Smythe demonstrated a level of expertise in cataloging my small size collection that is simply unmatched. The exceptionally strong bidder response and better than expected results only bear this out."
- R.K.V.
"I was VERY satisfied and felt the whole sale (early correspondence, finalizing items for sale, catalogue, sale and results) was handled with A#1 INTEGRITY and HONESTY, unsurpassed like I've never seen before."
- GK, MINNESOTA
"Stephen Goldsmith gave me the extra TLC with personal phone calls. That's what made me choose Smythe. I'm very pleased with the results. You can visit with the folks from Smythe, and be treated decently, whether you have a $1 collection or a million dollar collection. If I have any material in the future I'll call Smythe first."
- M.D.
"As a frequent auction consignor, we find Smythe to have a good combination of well written descriptions and the ability to find the ultimate buyers. With expertise over a wide spectrum of the numismatic field, Smythe is well positioned for the future of the hobby. We strongly recommend considering them for your auction needs."
- A.G.P.
"What a joy to see your catalogue and my lots so amply researched and featured. Thank you for the effort".
- M. Stocker, New York
"I always enjoy perusing the catalogues, both for the technical information provided, and for the occasional dry wit in the commentaries."
- K. Freer, Canada
"My thanks to everyone for the beautiful work on preparation and sale of my banknotes. I'm truly pleased and impressed..."
- G.E., Florida
"All too often we express ourselves when there may be cause for complaint; and too seldom do we do the same when thanks are in order. Our shipment of a number of items fetched in your sale arrived today. It was packed exactly right by our standards. Moreover, everything had been accurately catalogued. Your staff are always so courteous and accommodating!"
- A. Lovell Elliott, Massachusetts
"I've really appreciated your professionalisim and kindness for handling my consignment. Obviously, as soon as I have some other nice banknotes to offer they will fly directly to 'Smythe New York'"
- V. Depretre, France
"Thanks for the top service of your company. Hope to do business with you again."
- Z. Wang, China
"Thank you. I am thrilled with my note. Fantastic execution. You always do a great job for me."
- Norman Buckman, Ocean Grove, NJ
"Wow! What a super note! Absolutely gorgeous - just a beautiful note. Wanted you to know I was very happy. Looking forward to the next auction. Thanks for all the great service. R.M. Smythe is the best."
- S. Reinhardt, Chicago, IL
"It is impossible for anyone to have given me better terms, and the personal attention was greatly appreciated. When I have anything to auction I will give you a call. Yours is the only company I have ever consigned to, and the only company I will ever consign to in the future."
- Roger Kneece, Charlotte, NC
"Your catalogues are quickly becoming the finest in the auction business."
- John Reznikoff, Connecticut
"I predict that this book will quickly become the standard reference on Confederate currency. I want to thank Smythe for seeing this project to publication. You have done a great service for the collecting community."
- M. McNeil, Nederland, Colorado
"This is the most beautiful autograph catalogue ever published! A wonderful blend of photographs and narrative!"
- David Beach, Florida
"I have been and continue to be impressed by the quality and personable service covered by Smythe."
- Ken Latimer, Georgia
"Thanks for the excellent and respectful treatment you gave us. Dealing with you was altogether a very pleasant experience."
- Shel Michaels, Massachusetts
"The phone exchanges and personal conversations with you have been helpful, as are the detailed descriptions in the catalogues. Such service and knowledge builds trust, and from this I pass along the catalogues to friends so they may bid also."
- Chuck Denlinger, Pennsylvania
"I would like to make a comment on my experience with placing my collection of Documents with Revenue stamps for auction by Smythe. I am pleased with the results and with very professional manner with which the entire transaction has been handled. I am a collector, not primarily looking for profits, BUT, of course, wish to recoup what I can fairly obtain when I dispose of my collection. That said; I am amazed that out of about 200 documents all have been sold except for the very few remaining. It is easy to dispose of items of value, or in demand, but you have also found a 'home' for items that are relatively common."
- J. Denison, Sarasota
"First let me say CONGRATULATIONS on your first sale of Herb and Martha Schingoethe’s notes! The sale was run beautifully, and I thought it was the most successful obsolete sale I have ever attended in my almost 30 years of this business! I already look forward to the next sale and the many others to follow. Please tell all the staff at Smythe of my praise, and keep up the good work"
- Hugh Shull, South Carolina
"Why would I want to use any other auction house for scarce notes?"

- Dr. Arnold R. Saslow, Owner, Ye Olde Curiositie Shoppe, New Jersey
"The results of the last auction exceeded my expectation. Your firm demonstrated the pinnacle of professionalism from a perfectly laid out catalogue, an extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff, elegant viewing and auction facilities...which made every bidder feel special. I was impressed with the large number of dealers and collectors who actively bid on the lots in person and the added excitement of four staff members manning the phones. Your coming to my store to organize and estimate the lots made the consigning process simple. I will definitely use your services again and will recommend R.M. Smythe highly to all."
- R.C., New York
"I commend R.M. Smythe & Co. for refusing to sell "repaired", "restored", "processed", "cleaned", "pressed" or "conserved" items without disclosing those facts to the potential buyer. It seems the current market place is flooded with many such items that can fool even advanced collectors. This should give your potential buyers a lot more confidence that they will be treated fairly. In your Sept. 13-14, 2002 auction I was successful on one lot. I was quite pleased to receive the lot for my collection and to make it even better for me, you reduced the hammer price by $30.00. Thanks for accepting my bids and handling the auction in this manner. I was also pleased with the lots received in your auction #221. I appreciate being able to do business with a firm such as R.M. Smythe & Co."
- L.D., Missouri
"Thank you for the kindness you extended to us on our visit to your office. We were thrilled that the poster sold. Thank you!!"
- R. Huff San Antonio, Texas
"I purchased the new Confederate book at St. Louis, and it is really packed with so much great information. I took out some notes when I got home just to try and see what varieties I had- it was fun and I was able to pinpoint exactly which they were (no great rarities, unfortunately!)."
- N. Shafer, Wisconsin
"Thanks so much for a very satisfying, pleasant, productive and interesting morning.
Your coin trader sure knows the coin market and he did a very thorough job of looking at my collection.
I am certain that his numbers were fair. His tour helped me better understand your business.
I have been putting off the sale of the coin collection for years thinking it would be a difficult task.
It sure wasn't, and I feel much relieved."
- J.T., Brooklyn, NY
"Everything worked out perfectly. The flat was waiting at the Post Office this morning at 9:30 and came
through in great shape. Thanks for going the extra mile. I will mention my great satisfaction with your
efforts to the Smythe people here in Orlando tomorrow. Thanks!"
- W. Wolka, IN
"I would like at this time to thank Smythe Auctions for sending catalogs of your auctions. Even though I only collect Canadian $1.00 bank notes and related
Canadian $1.00 material I find the information in your well prepared catalogs very valuable. In particular the catalogs pertaining to the Herb and Martha
Schingoethe collection are great."
-Cliff Beattie, Canada
"Many Thanks for Your really good Service! I'm always very happy with any purchase from Smythe.
You work always very fast, exactly and correspond fully to the customer's desires. Please tell all the
staff at Smythe of my praise, and keep up the good work."
-Mike Teichmeier, Germany

eBay Bidder FAQ
|

New to Live Auction?
Participating in a eBay Live Auction is whole new experience even
to a veteran eBay user; but don't fret —
just follow this link to see how it works.
How can I see a better image of this lot?
We generally image every lot that we are selling, with the
exception of group lots comprised of many pieces which would
be unwieldy to image in their entirety. Please see our
eBay listings for all available
high-quality images. For questions about a particular lot
please call the Information Desk at 800-622-1880.
Why didn't my tie-bid win this lot?
Smythe awards tie bids to bidders who send in mail bids in
advance of the sale.
Why should I trust Smythe?
Smythe has been in business for over 125 Years, and has a sterling
reputation in the numismatic auction field. We have conducted hundreds
of auctions and have represented institutions, museums, and governments.
For testimonials from Smythe clients see the Testimonials page.
How does an eBay Live Auction differ from an eBay Auction?
eBay Live auctions are conducted in real time simultaneously with
a live auction at our offices or other suitable venue. As with
any live auction, eBay Live requires participants to register
in advance of bidding.
When are your items open for bidding?
An eBay Live Auction is not conducted in the same manner as a typical eBay auction;
the most notable difference is the bidding process. You have two options when bidding on an eBay Live Auction.
1. An "Absentee Bid" is a
bid that can be placed before the live auction has started.
2. A "Live Bid" is a bid
that can be placed while the auction is being conducted.
The window of opportunity to bid is from the time lot appears on eBay, until the Auctioneer closes the lot on the floor.
Please do not use the eBay "Time Left" field as an indicator of when our auction will be ending and when you should place your bids.
How do I check an auction's start time?
To view an auction's start time follow this link to our eBay listings
, select a lot and to the right of the "Auction Date" field is the auction start time.
How can I receive notice of upcoming Smythe sales?
All future Smythe auctions and events are posted on our Calendar.
To be added to our email contact list please send us an
email.
How can I be added to Smythe's mailing list?
Please send an email
with your name, address, and phone number.
How can I determine the current bid for a lot?
Smythe does not offer this information since that data is constantly
changing. Starting bids are announced when lots are opened for live bidding by the auctioneer.
Help! I mis-bid on an item via eBay!
Unfortunately, we have no control over bids placed through eBay.
Can you tell me what amount I bid on an eBay lot?
No, we do not have access to any information entered on eBay's site,
and we will not know which eBay bidders, if any, have won a lot
until the bidding has completed.
I want to bid on several items, but I only want to win one.
In this scenario it is better to place bids directly with Smythe, as
we will handle this type of bidding with the utmost care. Please call
us at 800-622-1880 to place an either-or bid.
How can I limit my spending to a specific amount?
If you have a budget for your auction spending you can submit a bidsheet
with a limit amount. We will bid on your behalf up to that amount. Please
list your bids in priority order. The buyer's premium will be added to the
total spent on merchandise.
How do I pay for my merchandise?
You will be invoiced shortly after the conclusion of the auction. Smythe
accepts personal checks, money orders, and PayPal payments for those who
bid through eBay Live. Bank wires can be sent after contacting the
Accounting department at 800-622-1880. Smythe will not accept payment
via Credit Card for auctions.
Will I be charged Sales Tax?
Sales Tax will be added to invoices of New York State residents who do
not provide a valid resale certificate. To submit a Resale Certificate
please fax a copy of the original document to the Accounting Department
at 212-312-6300.
How is the shipping and insurance amount calculated?
Our software takes into account the size and shape of the item, the
cost of the postage, and the value for insurance purposes. Packages
are well insulated against weather and transportation rigors. If you
experience any problem with your shipment please call us immediately
at 800-622-1880.
Where can I see prices realized for the entire sale?
Prices realized for each of our auctions are
posted on our
web-site
and typically updated daily during the week of the
sale and during the week following the last session.
